About the Author
George M. Marakas is an associate professor of Information Systems at the School of Business at the University of Kansas. His teaching expertise includes Systems Analysis and Design, Technology-Assisted Decision Making, Electronic Commerce, Management of IS Resources, Behavioral IS Research Methods, and Data Visualization and Decision Support. In addition, George is an active researcher in the area of Systems Analysis Methods, Data Mining and Visualization, Creativity Enhancement, Conceptual Data Modeling, and Computer Self-Efficacy. George received his PhD in Information Systems from Florida International University in Miami and his MBA from Colorado State University. Throughout his academic career, George has distinguished himself both through his research and in the classroom. He has received numerous national teaching awards and his research has appeared in the top journals in his field. I had to get this for a class. It comes as loose leaf bundle of paper that has no resale value.

The authors are stuck in the land that IT forgot. This is an old book with a couple references to "new" technology thrown in to justify a new edition. They talk a lot about mainframes, microcomputer workstations, and modems. A few fun quotes about "Information Appliances" from page 91:

"cellular phones and pagers...promise internet access and the ability to perform basic computational chores."

"the RIM BlackBerry, a small, pager-sized device that can perform all of the common PDA functions, plus act as a fully functional mobile telephone...doesn't even have a visible antenna."

"new entrants to this field...the iPhone essentially combines three products--a revolutionary mobile phone, a wide-screen iPod music and video player..."

I paid $140 for this book to find out that that Apple makes a phone that plays music?

Introduction to information systems

This book is just what it claims to be--an introduction to information systems. There is not a tremendous amount of detail here, but I believe there is enough to give the reader a good idea of the concepts involved. At times, the author does seem to carry on more than is needed, and often you can understand the concept of a chapter very well just by reading the sentences containing the bold words. The best part of the book, in my opinion, is the use of real-world examples, to show how the concepts discussed are being put into use, and how they have benefited real-life companies.
Chances are, if you're buying this book, it's for a college level course. I am a non-business major, and this book was part of a class I took as a general education credit. For this, I think the book is adequate, because it gives a decent introductions into IS without a lot of details. BIS majors, however, will not benefit a great deal from this book, as everything is so basic that it will be of little benefit to someone serious about working with information systems.

Introduction to Information Systems is the book that we are using in my 300 level Business Class in college. I found this book to be well illustrated and informative. It has some information that I have covered in earlier computer classes, but with a litter more in depth knowledge. I have found that the Summary at the end of each Chapter covers the main points, but leaves out some important information. I have found the Review Quiz at the end of each Chapter to be most helpful study tool. The book is well illustrated and contains alot of business examples. I think this is a good book for upper level information systems classes.

Ketogenic diet might be the best for you!

Losing weight is almost everyones goal nowadays. Choose the right diet plan for you so that you can achieve the body that you've been long desiring for. This book is one of the best book about Ketogenic Diet because it contains useful information and it has a different approach in writing it's content. It's short, clear, informative and straight to the point. As Jane Hudson said "the secret to Ketogenic diet is not starting it. It's all about picking the right food groups, scheduling your meal and working to get ketosis going." Always keep in mind that the most important aspect in this diet is to choose the best lifestyle for you so that you can sustain it until you reach your goal.

Great book!

It is a very interesting book about ketogenic diet. I didn't know a lot about this diet but after reading this book I know well what it is. I learned about a ketosis, meaning of sugar in my diet, about right proteins and right fats.There are so many different diets today that it is difficult to choose the right one, but after reading this book I decided to try ketogenic diet. It seems to be an easy way to lose weight and be healthy. I can recommend this book to everyone who is looking for an effective diet. The author explains everything clearly and this was a good read.

Good guide to keto diet

There are so many different diet plans you can choose from nowadays but the Ketogenic diet is a diet that my friend has good results with so I’ve decided to try it. This guide goes through all the basics that you need to know about the diet and gives you a lot of detail about the food types you should and shouldn't be eating. There is a lot of advice and tips on how to succeed on this diet and it’s a worthwhile guide to get if you are interested in starting it.

About the Author
Oscar Ratti received his degree in classical studies and law from the University of Naples where he was intercollegiate Greek-Roman wrestling champion and a member of the championship judo team. He later came to the United States and began to study aikido with Yasuo Ohara, one of the first instructors to teach in New York.

Adele Westbrook studied philosophy at Columbia University at the same time co-author Oscar Ratti was doing graduate work in the classical languages. They began to practice aikido together, and while studying under a variety of instructors in the United States and Europe, started the collection of notes and sketches which finally developed into this illustrated introduction to the art of aikido.

They also authored Secrets of the Samurai, and Mr. Ratti, now deceased, also provided the illustrations for Code of the Samurai, both available from Tuttle Publishing.

This is a fantastic book, overall

This is a fantastic book, overall, though I am probably not experienced enough yet to fully utilize it. The techniques are fully illustrated, and there is text to back it up where it's less clear. Foundational techniques like the kote gaeshi are illustrated in great detail, then other techniques that are built off of it are less descriptive, but still show what's going on. This book illustrates the flow of the techniques well, and while I'm sure it would be easier for a more experienced practitioner to follow, it helps me as a beginner to get a better grasp on the techniques that I've learned.

I've got a "Go To" scope, now what?

Looking for objects to look at with your computerized "Go To" telescope? Michael Covington, author of "Astrophotography for the Amateur" and "How to Use a Computerized Telescope" has a few suggestions. In this second volume of Cambridge's Practical Amateur Astronomy series he suggests various targets and observing programs. But that is not all. Also are tips on how to get the most out of various sources to identify the object of interest from various catalogs or atlases and to be able to tell a "Go To" telescope how to point to it. Probably the most useful pages in the book are the Bayer/Flamsteed to SAO cross-index and the GVCS constellation codes and star numbers.

The logical follow up for "How to Use a Computerized Telescope", this volume shows one how to use the various sources available to find the objects one is interested in studying. If I had this book when I first bought my LX200, I would have developed better habits in planning my observing sessions by being able to identify objects in the manner that the telescope has them identified in its database to find them quicker to allow more time for study and or imaging.

Just "Very Good" , not Perfect!

I have been buying alot of astronomy and telescope books of late--primarily to augment my new telescope. This is one of the better ones , since it is really much more substantive than the "cheerleading" books that are more useful at gracing the coffee table than the accessory tray of a telescope in use. The major plus feature for me is the format of the illustrations , which show the objects through a mirror type diagonal. Most , if not all , observations by amateur astronomers use this convention these days. The author goes into adequate detail on double star observing : measurement of position angle and seperation are very well explained.
My only criticism is the assumption that all users will be using computerized telescopes , and completely ignores those of us who "star hop" by choice , and not necessity. The lack of star hopping descriptions downgrades my rating to a strong 4 stars.
Highly recommended.

Really good backyard astronomy starts here

Once I received this book, I randomly flipped to a page and started reading. Now I cannot put the book down. It has a great deal of information on astronomy, selecting telescopes, when and where to look for stars. I was even surprised to read tips for viewing away from home. Its a good book and worth its weight in gold. Cheers!
