About the Author
Richard Barrett is Founder and Chairman of Barrett Values Centre. He is a Visiting Lecturer at the Consulting and Coaching for Change leadership course run jointly by HEC Executive Education in Paris, France and the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, UK. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Royal Roads University, Canada and is a Visiting Lecturer at Exeter University, UK.

Mapping the Journey to Sustainable Success

Several things set this book apart from the thousands of other books on business and organizational success:
1. It is comprehensive, taking into account the entire ecosystem within which all organizations exist. Many approaches focus on the perspective of the organization, this book also includes the perspectives and roles of employees and external stakeholders in creating sustainable success.
2. It is visionary, recognizing business as the most powerful force on the planet with the most potential to be a force for enduring good. This book focuses not just on being the best in the world, but on being the being the best for the world.
3. It is pragmatic, filled with case studies, measurement tools, developmental exercises and alignment processes for practical application. Richard Barrett has created a textbook that can be implemented by any leadership group interested in creating a truly great place to work.
At the heart of this book is a deep understanding of and appreciation for the developmental evolution of people and the organizations they create. People and organizations develop along predictable patterns, starting with basic survival needs and maturing into higher level growth needs. Barrett calls this full-spectrum maturity. As leaders and their organizations master their survival needs they free up energy and begin to focus on higher level needs such as team cohesion and making a difference in the world. Understanding this underlying developmental map is essential to understanding how needs connect to values and beliefs, and how fears create waste and dysfunction in organizations. This book clearly lays out the connection between human development and organizational success and reveals the levers that conscious leaders can utilize to accelerate and strengthen growth.
Chapter two, which lays out the link between exceptional financial performance and values, will be of particular interest to investors, executives and entrepreneurs. Using the latest data from his own and other's research, Barrett shows us that the most profitable companies do not focus on profit- they focus on employees and the other stakeholders in the wider ecosystem. In chapter three he goes on to show to create high levels of employee engagement by creating values alignment and mission alignment. In chapter four, he offers a nine step process to navigate whole system change and transformation.
After this insightful set-up, the rest of the book is dedicated to practical application. Part two focuses on mapping organizational values, part three on leadership, and part four on structural alignment.
In the foreword to this book, Barrett states that "...we have to turn to business if we want to create a sustainable future for humanity." I could not agree more, and strongly recommend this book to fellow coaches, consultants and business leaders who share this vision and are working in the trenches to bring it into reality.

The Values-Driven Organization

This book is a fabulous compilation of all the work and resources available from Richard Barrett and the Barrett Values Centre. The knowledge, wisdom, case studies and research he shares is extremely helpful, in particular, to consultants and leaders who are going through cultural transformation. I highly recommend the book.

A Conscious Capitalist Must Read

Richard has been an important teacher in my life since I met him in the late 90's. I knew then as I know now, that values and how you and/or your organization lives consistently with your espoused values are the keys to happiness and fulfillment. While you can guess how consistently you live your values, as a leader it's what your followers tell you that determines your effectiveness. There is no better values measurement system in the world and this book does an excellent job of not only describing the instruments and how they were developed, but the nitty gritty on how to implement them to increase personal and organizational performance.
I am an active member and Chapter chair in the Conscious Capitalism movement that Richard references in Chapter 2. As I speak to leaders and groups about Conscious Capitalism, it always boils down to where to start or continue the journey towards purpose and meaning in life and business. It's easy...READ THIS BOOK. Even the successes of the conscious businesses described in Firms and Endearment (2007) and the soon to be released Firms of Endearment II (Jan. 2014) would be greatly enhanced by the adoption of the Corporate Transformation Tools.
What I like best about this book however is that I can recommend this one book to give a complete picture of the wisdom found in is previous books with the added benefit of his current wisdom accumulated over these years.
