About the Author
O. C. Ferrell (Ph.D., Louisiana State University) is University Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics at Belmont University. He most recently served nine years as University Distinguished Professor of Marketing and Creative Enterprise Scholar at the University of New Mexico. His academic research focuses on ethical decision-making, stakeholder relationships and social responsibility. He is a leading author in marketing ethics and stakeholder orientation to achieve marketing performance in organizations. Dr. Ferrell is past president of the Academic Council of the American Marketing Association and chaired the American Marketing Association Ethics Committee twice. Under his leadership, the committee developed the AMA Code of Ethics and the AMA Code of Ethics for Marketing on the Internet. He is Vice President of Publications for the Academy of Marketing Science. He has received the Cutco Vector Distinguished Marketing Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing Science. Dr. Ferrell is the co-author of 20 books and more than 100 articles. His articles have been published in the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and The Academy of Management Executive, as well as other journals. On a global level, he has helped affect business ethics dialogue by being the only ethics professor invited by a former U.S. Secretary of State to participate in an executive seminar on globalization and its implications and challenges for societies, corporate responsibility, and public policy and included ambassadors and economic ministers from Argentina, Australia, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Germany, the Republic of Georgia, Lesotho, Mexico, Peru, and Poland, as well as Fortune 100 firms such as Raytheon, Lockheed-Martin, and Sumitomo Corporation. He was invited by FEDERASUL, a prestigious business organization in Brazil, to discuss business ethics on a panel that included one of Brazil's Supreme Court Justices as well as a former ambassador. In 2006?2007, Professor Fraedrich was awarded the Bill Daniels Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics at the University of Wyoming, College of Business. Recently, Professor Fraedrich was invited to teach for the Department of the Army at the General Officer level concerning "The Consequences of Power." His class included 13 Brigadier Generals as well as five star generals (two lieutenant generals and three major generals). He is also the author of integrated application-oriented ethics software for academics and Fortune 500 corporations.

Dr. Linda Ferrell (Ph.D. University of Memphis) is professor of marketing at Belmont University. Dr. Ferrell coauthored Business and Society with O. C. Ferrell and Debbie M. Thorne and is co-author of Business in a Changing World with O.C. Ferrell and Geoff Hirt. I feel more ethical already!

The book has good content but I rented the e-book and it does not have text to voice capability. I am getting my MBA, work full time and I enjoy running while listening to a couple of chapters as I feel like I am multitasking. It would be great is this book had the capability to allow that.

Valuable Book for Ethics Course

This textbook had a lot of good information and covered a spectrum of ethical business situations and concepts. Tied together with the information from the instructor, this book was a valuable tool in the learning process for my Business Ethics course. It read well and had a lot of helpful case studies to get your mind thinking.

Confusing and Dry

The text was very dry and repetitive making for a very hard read. I dreaded the time each week that I had to spend reading this book. It seemed to purposely complicate topics that were clear before I started reading, and tried to use that to constantly convince me that I needed to study business ethics. It was annoying, to say the least.
Plus, (although this isn't necessarily against this particular book) the concept of ethics without a base worldview is very hard to comprehend. This book definitely did not make that difficulty any easier. It is probably the worst textbook I've read (out of about 20 or so).

Mapping the Journey to Sustainable Success

Several things set this book apart from the thousands of other books on business and organizational success:

1. It is comprehensive, taking into account the entire ecosystem within which all organizations exist. Many approaches focus on the perspective of the organization, this book also includes the perspectives and roles of employees and external stakeholders in creating sustainable success.
2. It is visionary, recognizing business as the most powerful force on the planet with the most potential to be a force for enduring good. This book focuses not just on being the best in the world, but on being the being the best for the world.
3. It is pragmatic, filled with case studies, measurement tools, developmental exercises and alignment processes for practical application. Richard Barrett has created a textbook that can be implemented by any leadership group interested in creating a truly great place to work.

At the heart of this book is a deep understanding of and appreciation for the developmental evolution of people and the organizations they create. People and organizations develop along predictable patterns, starting with basic survival needs and maturing into higher level growth needs. Barrett calls this full-spectrum maturity. As leaders and their organizations master their survival needs they free up energy and begin to focus on higher level needs such as team cohesion and making a difference in the world. Understanding this underlying developmental map is essential to understanding how needs connect to values and beliefs, and how fears create waste and dysfunction in organizations. This book clearly lays out the connection between human development and organizational success and reveals the levers that conscious leaders can utilize to accelerate and strengthen growth.

Chapter two, which lays out the link between exceptional financial performance and values, will be of particular interest to investors, executives and entrepreneurs. Using the latest data from his own and other's research, Barrett shows us that the most profitable companies do not focus on profit- they focus on employees and the other stakeholders in the wider ecosystem. In chapter three he goes on to show to create high levels of employee engagement by creating values alignment and mission alignment. In chapter four, he offers a nine step process to navigate whole system change and transformation.

After this insightful set-up, the rest of the book is dedicated to practical application. Part two focuses on mapping organizational values, part three on leadership, and part four on structural alignment.

In the foreword to this book, Barrett states that "...we have to turn to business if we want to create a sustainable future for humanity." I could not agree more, and strongly recommend this book to fellow coaches, consultants and business leaders who share this vision and are working in the trenches to bring it into reality.

The knowledge, wisdom, case studies and research he shares is extremely helpful, in particular, to consultants and leaders who are going through cultural transformation. I highly recommend the book.

A Conscious Capitalist Must Read

Richard has been an important teacher in my life since I met him in the late 90's. I knew then as I know now, that values and how you and/or your organization lives consistently with your espoused values are the keys to happiness and fulfillment. While you can guess how consistently you live your values, as a leader it's what your followers tell you that determines your effectiveness. There is no better values measurement system in the world and this book does an excellent job of not only describing the instruments and how they were developed, but the nitty gritty on how to implement them to increase personal and organizational performance.

I am an active member and Chapter chair in the Conscious Capitalism movement that Richard references in Chapter 2. As I speak to leaders and groups about Conscious Capitalism, it always boils down to where to start or continue the journey towards purpose and meaning in life and business. It's easy...READ THIS BOOK. Even the successes of the conscious businesses described in Firms and Endearment (2007) and the soon to be released Firms of Endearment II (Jan. 2014) would be greatly enhanced by the adoption of the Corporate Transformation Tools.

What I like best about this book however is that I can recommend this one book to give a complete picture of the wisdom found in is previous books with the added benefit of his current wisdom accumulated over these years.

This is a small, handy document that contains the text of the Constitution of the United States in full, as well as several other major formative documents: The Virginia Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and a collection of case law summaries that relate to major constitutional issues in history.

The book also contains an essay on the origins of the Constitution, including a brief overview of the Revolutionary War, the failures of the Articles of Confederation, the Convention of 1787, and the ratification process. After the text of the documents is a brief essay on the role of the Supreme Court and the doctrine of judicial review. Perhaps most surprising to most Americans is that the powr of judicial review is not a constitutionally-granted power to the Supreme Court, but rather develops out of the English common law tradition and the early Federalist thinkers.

This text concludes with a brief summary of major federal offices, qualifications for office and duties assigned to the offices. It also lists presidents, Supreme Court justices, lists of states with dates of settlement and entering the union, and other handy facts and lists.

This is a good book to have handy - every household in the United States should have a copy of the Constitution.

Solid Introduction to the Law in the Hebrew Scriptures

It is a shame that this book is out of print. It offers a solid introduction the law in the Hebrew Scriptures Law. Patrick begins the study be reviewing the place of critical scholarship and biblical law. He then moves on to the various 'books' of law in the Hebrew Scriptures dedicating a chapter to the Ten Commandments, the Book of the Covenant, Deuteronomic law, Holiness Code and Priestly Law. He rounds the book off with two final chapters and a postscript. The second to last chapter discusses the difference between written and unwritten law. The author points out that the earliest codes of law were essentially written forms of an unwritten law code (descriptive). He claims that it wasn't until Deuteronomic school that the law became synonymous with the written law (proscriptive). He continues this argument by claiming that with the love commandment (in MK 12.28ff & Pars.) the law reverts `back' to an unwritten law. The final chapter discusses the place of covenant making in Old Testament law.
This book seems to cover most of the main issues dealing with the law in the Hebrew Scriptures (at least at the time of its writing) and presents the material in an accessible way. I had two minor complaints of the book. The first criticism I had of the book was the lack of cultural anthropological insights in discussing some of the law codes (especially the laws dealing with the cult). The second criticism may only be my perception, but I seemed to notice a slight prejudice against post-exilic writings (DTRH, Holiness Code, and Priestly Law). These minor quibbles aside this book is a good place to start for learning more about law in the Hebrew Scriptures.

An intriguing journey into a past that affects over half the people on the planet

If you're interested in finding out more about ancient Jewish practices and law, Dale Patrick's book is an excellent introduction. It may be 30 years old, but the Old Testament hasn't changed for centuries. Patrick's analysis is very well-organized and thorough. His work is based on solid historical methodology, and he is careful to explain that methodology before he begins this intriguing journey into a past that affects over half the people on the planet. Many books on this subject are dry husks, appreciated only by scholars. Not so with Old Testament Law.
Biblical criticism is still controversial, so if you believe the Bible should be followed, not analyzed, this is not the book for you. Most students of the OT are now familiar with the various "sources" from which the final Masoretic text was composed, called J, E, P and D for "Yawhist", "Elohist", "Priestly" and "Deuteronomist". These different textual traditions are explained and the reasoning behind this approach is a basic assumption of the book. This is only the beginning. Patrick takes the reader on a trip that begins with the 10 commandments, through Deuteronomy, examines the holiness codes and the concept of the covenant, and ends up asking "What is the meaning of this law?"
Well-written, with a good bibliography for further study, and thoughtful.
An excellent companion to this book is Martin Noth's The Laws of the Pentateuch.

This is my second year using the planner. I find it so helpful to have kind reminders to write down what is important. I am however a little disappointed that the quality of the paper is not as good as that of last year's. Also, I would love more space for the weekends (I have more events for the kids).

It is a great introduction to the Endless

Preludes & Nocturnes is the first graphic novel in the famed Sandman series. It is a great introduction to the Endless. In Preludes & Nocturnes, we meet mortal men who use magic to attempt to capture Death, one of the Endless. Instead, they get Dream (also known to some as the Sandman). They trap Dream for a century, not realizing what havoc they are reeking on the world. Dream lives in the Dreamworld. He can enter our dreams unbeknownst to us and influence them or be a simple passer by.

I really enjoyed getting to see Dream and follow him on his quest to find what was rightfully his. Some of the journey was weird, other parts a bit twisted, but the end result was great. I especially enjoyed watching Dream interact with Death. I'm excited to read the rest of the series and meet the other Endless.

Also, intriguing to me was the way that Dream was drawn. Is it just me, or does he look a bit like Gaiman himself? ;)

Featuring the same amusing characters as those found in Mark Schultz's The Stuff of Life: A Graphic Guide to Genetics and DNA, Hosler's sequel does for natural selection what its predecessor did for human genetics. The intrepid Glargalian scientist, Bloort 183, has returned and serves as the book's principal narrator. This time he has invited King Floorsh 727 and Prince Floorsh 418 on a tour of the newly opened Glargalian Holographic Museum of Earth Evolution. Hosler (Clan Apis; Sandwalk Adventures) is also a professor of biology and provides readers with much more than a simple graphic primer on evolution. With the Cannons' wonderful illustrations providing a visual anchor, Hosler discusses everything from the atomic to the planetary, from endosymbiosis to mass extinction. The book, like its predecessor, may be too dense with information--for instance, the 54 million years of the Cambrian period is covered in a mere six panels. However, readers should find at the end of their journey through Bloort's Holographic Museum that they've learned a tremendous amount about earth's evolution, and have had more than their fair share of amusement in doing so. Witty, engaging, and educational.

Using the same framing device as The Stuff of Life: A Graphic Guide to Genetics and DNA (aliens discuss the subject, giving an "outsider's" perspective and an excuse for lots of explanation and examples), "Evolution" depicts the theory using historical snippets, wise and wonderful illustrations, and cutting-edge information. While the target audience might be the 10- to 16-year-old set, this middle-aged man, well-versed in evolutionary science basics, found a lot to love in this book. For one thing, it's just super-cute a lot of the time. And while technically I didn't learn anything really new in it, seeing ideas I already grasped presented in fresh, captivating ways makes them feel new again.

I suppose that's what "Evolution" does for me. If books like this existed when I was a kid, I didn't know about them, and I spent benighted decades preferring magical answers to actual science. This book, with its great information and frankly kind of juvenile presentation, helps make me feel more like a kid again, making old discoveries for a first time. That's some real magic.

Engaging, funny, informative

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in learning more about how the world around them works, but is daunted (or bored) by the more traditional textbooks of the classroom. Through its narrative framework and captivating illustrations, this book makes the more technical, elusive details of biological processes and evolutionary mechanisms relatable, imaginable, and ultimately knowable. It's packed with information but fun to read. Definitely worth it.

Shaping a Muslim State provides a synthetic study of the political, social, and economic processes which formed early Islamic Egypt. Looking at a corpus of previously unknown Arabic papyrus letters, dating from between AD 730 and 750, which were written to a Muslim administrator and merchant in the Fayyum oasis in Egypt, Sijpesteijn examines the reasons for the success of the early Arab conquests and the transition from the pre-Islamic Byzantine system and its Egyptian executors to an Arab/Muslim state.

By examining the impact of Islam on the daily lives of those living under its rule, the volume highlights the striking newness of Islamic society while also acknowledging the influence of the ancient societies which preceded it. The book applies theoretical discussions about governance, historiography, (social) linguistics, and source criticism to understand the dynamics of early Islamic Egypt, as well as the larger process of state formation in the Islamic world.
