James B. Connelly is a psychologist and translator. James holds the PhD in Psychology and is a graduate of Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. He has worked in private and public practice in the United States, Europe, Japan and South America. James has published numerous research articles and translations of Morita Therapy and Naikan Therapy.

Reminds me of Philip Roth

I don't understand the negative reactions to this book, as frankly it is a classic of sorts. It can't help but remind me of novels written by aging male writers of a certain era, that exhibit their bewildered rage at their waning virility and a world rapidly passing them by. Of course most such writers, say Roth or even Mailer, managed to elevate their self pity to art and to sprinkle their rage with humor and wit.'Dr. Connelly' apparently needs no such crutches.
'The Modern Liberal Jungle' is presented as 'non-fiction' though judging by the hysteric tone it's not clear if this is done ironcially or not...but really the politics are window dressing, and if you do put aside the politics, which are mostly inane gibberish, what you have is a fascinating portrait of the American male psyche in decline, one which would be heartbreaking if the author didn't come across as quite so full of himself, someone with a heart as shriveled as his gonads.
Still if you wish to understand the impotent rage of old white men of the sort that make up much of the Tea Party, then this isn't a bad place to start. And you may laugh and even cry, though perhaps not at the points intended by the author.

Nothing to See Here, Move Along, Folks

Reviewer's disclaimer: I did not purchase this book. I read through the excerpts provided by Amazon. I have also debated with the author of this screed on Amazon's political discussion forums. I use the word "debate" loosely as generally everyone with an opposing opinion, no matter how factually sourced, is eventually termed a "liar" and dismissed.
If you are a thoughtful, serious conservative you will want to save your money for something more intelligent and rational. As other reviewers have noted, the book is basically a rehash of the author's all-or-nothing forum pronouncements about what he calls "The Modern Liberal." He paints with an extremely broad brush, eschewing nuanced thought supported by factual examples for what he believes are scathing revelations on the nature of that horrible species. A speaker begins to lose all credibility when he makes always/never statements. In this case, "The Modern Liberal always _____" or "The Modern Liberal never _____" will flip your thinking switch to auto-pilot.
On the other hand, if you prefer your politics served up prepackaged and steaming right off the right-wing talk radio grill, you will love this volume. Everything you need to know about how at least a third of your fellow American neighbors hate America; how their agenda includes attempts to sexualize our children and inspire promiscuity; to promote a culture that is friendly to gays, uppity women, non-Christians; and to otherwise destroy our country is right here! Even the cover is an amazing piece of art. Madow and Mao, together -- how clever!
I will give the author props for decent grammar, few spelling errors, and understanding how to use punctuation. My advice is to skip this book and do your own thinking.

Levinesque tripe

The Modern Liberal is nothing more and nothing less than a crank one-upmanship which sullies rather than honors American Conservative thought. This is the type of vituperative reasoning that real conservatives such as William Buckley railed against, the taking over of the political domain by paranoids, such as when the John Birch Society tried to take over the Republican party. Buckley would have told the writer of this harping account to pick up a copy of Clinton Rossiter and return when he had something real to say about the American political landscape.
