An essential practical reference on consulting

I had the pleasure of taking a consulting course taught by Samir Parikh 14 years ago. To this day, this course remains the single most influential training experience in my career. So it was with great anticipation that I read "The Consultant's Handbook", and I was not disappointed. The book's title sums it up; if I had to choose just one practical reference source on consulting, this would be the one.

Clear and practical guide for consultants

This book is a breath of fresh air. It’s a book which is exactly what it says it is – a handbook for consultants. It takes you through different elements of offering a consulting service, clearly explaining what’s needed and giving examples to help you fully understand the points made.

What struck me is that the advice in the book is all highly practical – it doesn’t just set out high level theory as to what a consultant is but really gets into the nitty gritty of it. For example there’s a chapter on Managing Client Meetings which takes you through how to plan the meeting and suggesting how to structure the meeting to get the best results. This is a level of detail which I often feel is missing from business books.

Although the examples in the book are from scenarios involving large businesses, I could easily see how I could apply a lot of the techniques and structure to working on small projects. The client meetings section is one that particularly jumped out at me and I will be going through that again to feed into how we run meetings. Another area which really struck a cord with me is the importance of good communication in project work. This is an area which I always feel I need to improve, so I will be dipping back into this as well.

And I really do feel like this is a book which I will be able to ‘dip’ back into to pull out particular information, which is exactly what you need with a handbook. I love the way the chapters are laid out, with regular sub-headings to give each a really strong structure, the examples boxed out to differentiate from the rest of the content, and a summary at the end reiterating the important points. My tidy brain really appreciated the structured approach.

I think you can probably tell by now that I’m a big fan of this book. More of the same please!

NOT WHAT IT SEEMS

my daughter wanted a book on how to style hair, this book is great for teaching the basics of care and a right cut but not styling. it gave the impression it "showed" how to style your own hair when infact the pictures are of someone else doing the styles on a model. wanting a book with pictures of that individual actually fixing their own hair so show placement of hands and equipment when used.

I bought this on my kindle and have had it a few years now, I got a few tips from it but not much. The detailed lists of products are helpful but he isn't as helpful when it comes to cuts that you can take a picture of to your hairdresser (or open your kindle and show them).

This reads more like a celebrity hairdresser (which he is) dishing on what he did for this or that woman's hair.

Great book with useful tips and advice

This book had lots of great tips for styling hair and keeping it healthy. It was also well written, especially given that the stylist is not a professional writer. The photos and quality of the book are also very good. I got lots of great tips from this book that I use every day.

This is a study of the meaning of gender as framed by the swan maiden tale, a story found in the folklore of virtually every culture. The swan maiden is a supernatural woman forced to marry, keep house, and bear children for a mortal man who holds the key to her imprisonment. When she manages to regain this key, she escapes to the otherworld, never to return.

These tales have most often been interpreted as depicting exogamous marriages, describing the girl from another tribe trapped in a world where she will always be the outsider. Barbara Fass Leavy believes that, in the societies in which the tale and its variants endured, woman was the other--the outsider trapped in a society that could never be her own. Leavy shows how the tale, though rarely explicitly recognized, is frequently replayed in modern literature.

Beautifully written, this book reveals the myriad ways in which the folktales of a society reflect its cultural values, and particularly how folktales are allegories of gender relations. It will interest anyone involved in literary, gender, and cultural studies.

Barbara Fass Leavy is Professor of English at Queens College, City University of New York and Adjunct Professor of English in Psychiatry at Cornell University Medical College. She is the author of To Blight with Plague: Studies in a Literary Theme and, with Per Schelde Jacobsen, of Ibsen's Forsaken Merman: Folklore in the Late Plays.
