About the Author
Sophie Webb is often at sea. Research ships have taken her to many shores, including those of Hawaii, Mexico, Central and South America, Alaska, and the Antarctic. Her ornithological illustrations appear in A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America, of which she is co-author. She lives in Bolinas, California.

Perfect Book for Aspiring Scientists

This is a really cool book, told from the point of view of the author/illustrator/ornithologist, Sophie Webb. It is essentially an illustrated scientific journal, documenting a research expedition on a ship through the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean. Each of the journal entries in the book include a date, location, latitude and longitude and are fully illustrated. Even the interior of the ship is depicted.
I love that the journal entries include detailed descriptions, not only of what the scientists saw on their journey, but also scientific explanations about how data is collected and recorded and how ocean ecosystems work. Naturally, since this is a book about oceans, birds and fish are the highlighted animals, and the illustrations of many species are incredible. While reading the book, young readers can really get an idea of what life as a scientist might be like. This is so important, because the world certainly needs more scientists, and a book such as Far from Shore may just inspire young students to choose future careers in science.
I was so impressed with this book that I interviewed the author to learn more about the fascinating process of writing and illustrating journal books for children. Author Sophie Webb has written two other journal books, My Season with Penguins: An Antarctic Journey and Looking for Seabirds: Journal from an Alaskan Voyage. Both of these books have won a number of impressive awards, and I'm not surprised. I highly recommend Far from Shore as a gift for any young, aspiring scientist you may know.

Absolutely amazing book for younger children too

I checked this book out from the library a while back for a young child going through an ocean phase, read it over and over, and then returned it. Then I moved and have been hunting for it again ever since. The book is incredible because the author has both the scientific knowledge and perspective on what the expedition discovers and a thoughtful, reflective stance on the experience of journeying with a crew and painting every day. All this is voiced in a personal way that makes one feel directly involved in the voyage. The watercolors are beautiful and serve as much more than illustrations of the voyage; they are part of its process. As an anthropologist who does a very different kind of fieldwork but understands the intensity of long-term research, I really appreciated learning about oceanography through Webb's firsthand account. When reading it aloud to a small child, you may need to abridge some of the content or read it in small chunks, but it will definitely keep both adult readers and children engaged.

You are never going to believe how wonderful this book is.
It will absolutely blow you away.
If you have a science minded child who maybe is not sure about how their interests can be developed into a science career, this is a great book.

How the Dinosaur Got to the Museum
If you have a child interested in dolphins (EVERY child, as far as I can tell), this is a great book.
If you have a child who loves the idea of adventure travel/science, this is a great book.
If you have a child with an artistic streak, this is a great book.
Just... this book blew my doors off. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK.
