Aktuelle Modedesigner orientieren sich an Nerdklischees und statten ihre Models mit überdimensionalen Hornbrillen und ähnlichen Kleidungsstücken aus. Während Nerds früher als gesellschaftl-che Randgruppe galten, ist es mittlerweile beinahe schon ein Trend geworden, sich selbst als Nerd zu bezeichnen. Dieser Gesinnungswandel ist in erster Linie ein Produkt unseres hoch technisierten Zeitalters, in dem man ohne grundsätzliche Computerkenntnisse die Anforderungen des täglichen Lebens nur noch mit Mühe bewältigen kann und in dem die Naturwissenschaften eine immer größere Rolle spielen.

Dieser Unterschied wird, wie alle gesellschaftlichen Wandlungen, auch im Fernsehen reflektiert. In den Serien, und besonders in den Sitcoms und Kinderserien der 80er und 90er Jahre wurden Nerds meist als Randfiguren, als „comic relief“, dargestellt. Sie waren selten Sympathieträger und noch seltener Hauptfiguren. Meist handelte es sich um übertriebene, karikaturhafte Figuren wie zum Beispiel Steve Urkel aus Alle unter einem Dach. Es wurde über die Nerds gelacht, nicht mit ihnen.

In letzter Zeit hingegen hat sich dies gewandelt. In Serien wie Freaks and Geeks (in Deutschland unter dem Titel Voll daneben, voll im Leben ausgestrahlt) sind Nerds die Hauptcharaktere und auch Identifikationsfiguren für den Zuschauer. Eine der beliebtesten Figuren der Serie Heroes war der Nerd und Comic-Fan Hiro Nakamura. Die MTV-Zeichentrickserie Daria war eine der wenigen Sendungen, die einen weiblichen Nerd zur Hauptfigur machte. Auch in Sendungen, in denen dies nicht das primäre Thema ist, werden des Öfteren Themen aus der Nerdkultur behandelt. Mittlerweile hat sich also die Präsenz von Nerdkultur und Nerds im Fernsehen deutlich gewandelt, insbesondere, da in einer pluralistischen und technologieorientierten Zeit die Abgrenzung zwischen Nerd- und Mainstreamkultur immer schwerer wird.

Diese Arbeit will exemplarisch drei Beispiele der Darstellung von Nerds und Nerdkultur im zeitgenössischen Fernsehen untersuchen, die jeweils unterschiedliche Aspekte der Subkultur repräsentieren: Freizeitgestaltung, Arbeitswelt und mögliche Gefahren.

About the Author

Francesco Durante is a journalist as well as Professor of literature at the University of Suor Orsola Benincasa as part of the Program in Modern Languages and Culture.

Robert Viscusi, Ph.D., is professor of English and executive officer of the Wolfe Institute for the Humanities at Brooklyn College, president of the Italian American Writers Association, novelist, critic, and scholar of Italian American literature and culture, author of the epic poem Ellis Island.

Anthony Julian Tamburri, Ph.D., is dean of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute (Queens College, CUNY) and former president of the Italian American Studies Association and the American Association of Teachers of Italian. His latest book is Re-reading Italian Americana (2013).

James J. Periconi, a Manhattan attorney, exhibited his collection of more than one hundred Italian-language American imprints of authors whose works are excerpted in Italoamericana at New York's Grolier Club in 2012 and extensively catalogued these works in Strangers in a Strange Land.

Italoamericana Vol. II - Finally in English: the Italian migration in the words of those who lived it. - a great read

This English rendition of Volume II of Francesco Durante's extraordinary anthology of the writings of the Italians in America from the 1880's to World War II is a revelation to anyone interested in the language, intellectual life, literature, performance culture and social perspectives of the people of the "Italian colony" during its sudden expansion. The book also happens to be fun to read: sometimes tragic, sometimes comic, sometimes ironic, never dull. The size of the volume might be a little off-putting to the casual reader, but it can and should be read in discrete, relatively brief sittings, author by author. Durante's introduction of each author places the writings in context and brings them and the Italian colony to life. Shouts of "Bravi" are due for the publisher, the editors and translators who have made available in modern yet faithful English the idiosyncratic Italian of the original texts. Italoamericana Volume II stands out as an important contribution to a more nuanced understanding of the Italian immigrant experience in the United States. It might well also provide insights into immigration in more general terms. Anyone who starts reading this book will wonder when we can have a translation of Volume I, the writings of Italians in America from the beginnings of the United States until the period covered by this volume. A great source for the curious but definitely "dry" unless you ...

If you are of Italian descent, this book will answer/explain a whole lot of questions and mysteries you may have grown up with, such as, why we knew so little about our heritage, were not taught the language, what experiences our ancestors were silent about, etc. The book is quite a find as it was written in Italian by Italian authors who read many original sources, including newspapers written in the States addressed to the immigrant community. A great source for the curious but definitely "dry" unless you are interested in understanding the Italian immigrant experience which our ancestors never talked about.

Impressive First Read!!

Blake Whitman has made his business successful by following the rules, and never straying from the straight and narrow. He lives for his work, and spends day and night dedicated to ensuring that he is always two steps ahead of everyone else. He also believes that office romances should never come into play, and that business and pleasure should never find themselves in the same room... that is until a certain new secretary catches his eye and has him considering breaking one of his cardinal rules.

Kira Layton is a woman of the people and she is not above pushing the limits to get what she wants, even if that means working for the enemy. She has taken a secretarial job working for the one man she despises in order to see to it that he does right by the people in their community. But when she starts to see things in her new boss that she likes, it leaves her wanting to cross enemy lines to get what she desires...

It was a true pleasure to meet Blake and Kira, the intense chemistry between these two was like a magnet that pulled me right into their world and had me hanging onto their every word. Their story was filled with passion, intensity, and some heated moments that had me in need of a fan! This was my first time reading a book by this author, and I can say with complete certainty it won't be my last!! Definitely a VERY impressive first read, and a book I think should be added to the top of everyone's reading lists!!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the publisher. Cute story. Blake is a work alcoholic. He has lost so many secretaries because of his hours and looks. Kira gave up a high power job and just want to save dogs and her mother’s building. Blake makes a proposition that she works for him as a secretary and he will help her with her charities and saving her mother’s building from revitalization. Once the line are blurred and they transition from boss and security to more; they question each other feelings. A misunderstanding puts a wedge between them but Blake comes through in the end. Loved it. Recommended read.

I'm so happy I have received this book in advance. I read it in one sitting, because I couldn't put it down. The plot held my interest through the whole book. Also, the characters were real and easy to connect to.

The story starts with Blake, who's a real estate development CEO, being bumped over by Kira and her bunch of dogs. As they part ways neither of them know that fate has other plans for them. When latter that day Blake's secretary suddenly quits and Blake finds himself in dire need of a new one, who better to fill that position other than Kira, that came to his office in hopes to convince him to rethink the demolition of her mothers building.

I quite enjoyed reading Blake's POV. He's your typical workaholic, who has a strict working policy that includes no sexual relationships with his co-workers. It was great to see his inner battle between his working morals and trying not to break his own rules and fall for Kita. In the end, he has almost no choice but to give in to their strong chemistry. Also, seeing how he is with dogs definitely brought him some brownie points.

As for Kira's character, I really liked that she wants to make a difference in her community. She knows what she wants and goes for it. She's also very smart and knows how to achieve her goals. At heart she a wonderful person with a big love for rescued dogs that she even brings to work. Both main characters are made for each other.

For such a short read, the story has developed characters that gradually fall in love. The only thing that bothered me, was the fast paced drama at the end and how they resolved their misunderstanding.

All in all, this is an interesting and pleasant read. :)

Each chapter begins as one of the characters telephones another. Occasionally it will be difficult for readers to distinguish one character's dialogue from another. However, the story is well constructed, and readers will enjoy the excellent character development (even the parents are funny). All's well that ends well . . . I really liked this book, It is all phone conversations between these kids. It is alot different than most of R.L.s books but is still really good. I thought it was amusing and humorus ( I can't spell ) the way they kept getting back at each other. A FUn ReaD!

In the book Phone Calls by R.L.Stine is about two best friends who gets into a fight. Now their an arguing pack. Julie needs to straighten everything out. Now Ramar an exchange student calls Julie and asks her out. Now Julie has to find a
way to get out of her with Ramar.
Anyone who likes to read can read this book. I recommend Phone Calls to anyone who likes to talk on phone and know how to solve problems. Also if you read this book you might get to know what the author is trying to say. You should read this book because it has an amazing background to the story. This book should keep you out of trouble.

So good I couldn't put it down and read it in about 4 hours!

This book is about a couple kids who communicate all the time by using the phone. This book is mainly about a kid who thought that Mick the football player liked her so she went over to his house and acted like she was interviewing him for the school newspaper. But really she wasn't. There was a big confusion about this so people got back at each other by hooking them up with ther people. To find out what happened and to be so intrested in it like I was, buy the book and I promise that you will enjoy it.

Great detail, great (true) story

As a comic, this stands on its own; however, the fact that it is a true (and well-written) story makes it even better.

The level of detail in the research, artwork, and writing is excellent. This will make a great gift to some of my family members, and I know my coworkers will appreciate it.

One of the best things is that, though the content is mature, the artist and writer present it in a way which is appropriate for teenagers and even younger kids as well.

My hat is off to you. It is great that people are recording history in an interesting and beautiful medium such as this.
