MUST HAVE book for every NRI!

First, let me begin by saying I wish this book was published few years back, but in any case, I am happy its here now! I have found this book to be an easy-read for DUMMIES like me:). Thanks to author for including tons of real-life examples, and simplifying the complex language of taxation. I highly recommend this book to every person who wants to invest in India.

This is one of a kind book that clearly outlines different investment options available to NRI investors in India. The author is very articulate with a solid grasp on the subject (as evident from the considerable time he has spent in USA and India) and he complements his work with tons of practical case studies and examples that even new investor can comprehend and implement immediately. He clearly makes the case that time to make investment in India is now and we shouldn't miss the boat!! We all know India has been a growth machine for a last decade and more so now with Mr. Narendra Modi at the helm, so I appreciate the author for his commending work to publish the book at the most appropriate time! I went through the book cover to cover in one sitting, so it's definitely not a long and dry reading. In my view, both novice and experienced NRI investors can benefit from author's tips and insights.

About the Author
Peter Ladefoged, UCLA Research Phonetician and Professor of Phonetics Emeritus, was Director of the UCLA Phonetics Laboratory from 1962 to 1991. His numerous books include Vowels and Consonants (Blackwell, 2001), Sounds of the World’s Languages (with Ian Maddieson, Blackwell, 1996), and A Course in Phonetics (fourth edition, 2001).

In April 1943, a young physicist named Robert Serber stood up before a small group of fellow scientists in a laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and, as one attendee later recalled, began to speak in "a hazy, uncertain voice" about the project on which they would all be working. "The object," he said, "is to produce a practical military weapon in the form of a bomb in which the energy is released by a fast neutron chain reaction in one or more of the materials known to show nuclear fission." That mechanism, of course, was the atomic bomb, which a little more than two years later would be used against Japan.

In the following weeks, Serber touched on many themes, racing to an array of chalkboards to scribble complex formulas and equations. Among other things, he addressed how big a bomb would need to be in order to achieve critical mass--between 13.5 centimeters and 9 centimeters, he calculated--and what the probability of premature detonation might be. (It was, he concluded, always a danger.) At the end of the series, his lecture notes, classified as top secret, were gathered and printed for distribution to later cadres of scientists who came to work at Los Alamos. Years after the war they were declassified, and Serber, who died in May of 1997, took the opportunity to reflect on his work and the strange culture of the laboratory, adding postscripts and other commentary reproduced in the present edition.

Serber's book is an important document in the history of science, and remains one of the most accessible introductions to nuclear physics ever written. (On that note, those who worry that it is all too easy to find bomb-building instructions in the library or on the Web should rest assured: these lectures were tough for the greatest theoretical physicists of the time to follow.) Fascinating

This is an incredible book. This is originally a compilation of Robert Serber's notes he gave to incoming scientists at Los Alamos in the 1940s, explaining to them the purpose of the Manhattan Project and the expected means by which they would achieve their goal. This particular copy, courtesy of the University of California Press, contains not only an introduction by Mr. Richard Rhodes (author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb - strongly recommended), but notes throughout the Primer itself by Robert Serber. It is fascinating to read comments on a document by the man who wrote it many years afterward. Be warned: This is NOT a how-to book, and does require some basic knowledge of calculus and physics. It is, however, unbelievably interesting, and worth the cost to add it to your collection.

Los Alamos Primer

This book was a new addition to my library on 'Special Weapons'. I've had a long term interest in all things dealing with them. The Los Alamos Primer would have been a great purchase if it had simply consisted of the original lectures. The 4 men who contribute to this work have produced an important book.
Richard Rhodes introduced and edited (conducted) this book. I believe any book with his name attached, is worth a buy. I find his writing to be very clear and interesting.
Robert Serber, who gave the original lectures, does an excellent job of a literary 'voice over' on them. He explains, expounds, and fills out the basic lectures.
On top of what those 2 guys have made, this box of Cracker Jacks came with a very nice surprise. Included in this book are 2 old (1940-41) memorandums by Rudolf Peierls and Otto Frisch. These were instrumental in the notification of the Atomic potentials to the US/British governments. I have read about them, but never expected to read them. In 3 words- BUY THIS BOOK!

Technically sweet.

This book gives a brief and highly technical summary of what was known about nuclear fission in 1942 and how to go about turning this knowledge into a "practical weapon". Great fun to read if you have an engineering or physics degree or similar background knowledge. The author has extensively annotated and updated the terse original lecture notes that were given to new arrivals at Los Alamos. Interestingly, the annotations now take up more space that the original notes. These annotations may help to make the subject accessible to a non-technical audience as they provide invaluable historical and technical background. Invaluable for anyone interested in science history and/or the Manhattan Project.

Its original basis was formed by Cantor’s theory of sets and linear algebra. Its existence answered the question of how to state general principles of a broadly interpreted analysis in a way suitable for the most diverse situations. A.M. Vershik ([45], p. 438). This text evolved from the content of a one semester introductory course in fu- tional analysis that I have taught a number of times since 1996 at the University of Virginia. My students have included ?rst and second year graduate students prep- ing for thesis work in analysis, algebra, or topology, graduate students in various departments in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and several und- graduate mathematics or physics majors. After a ?rst draft of the manuscript was completed, it was also used for an independent reading course for several und- graduates preparing for graduate school.

Barbara D. MacCluer’s compact text, Elementary Functional Analysis, is an unusual book on a number of counts. For one, it unmistakably conveys the author’s abundant enthusiasm for her subject as well as her evident joy at presenting mathematics in general: it’s a rare thing that a GTM text is riddled with apposite quotes, anecdotes, and historical asides, all making for a wonderful personal touch and drawing the reader into dialogue with the author in an almost palpable way. It works quite well and makes for an enhanced experience of learning this beautiful but occasionally austere material in an almost informal setting. Talking about flesh and blood mathematicians goes a long way toward taking the edge off, so to speak, as this intrinsically exciting but dense material is presented more palatably by virtue of introducing this human element. It makes for very good reading.

Each of the six chapters of the book in introduced by a well-chosen quote, often hinting in a very useful manner at the material that is to follow. I particularly like MacCluer’s choice of Dunford and Schwartz to start off her third chapter: "In linear spaces with a suitable topology one encounters three far-reaching principles concerning continuous linear transformations…" We find out quickly that these "Big Three" (as the chapter is titled) are uniform boundedness, the open mapping theorem, and Hahn-Banach. MacCluer quickly goes on to cover these three gems in a most effective and elegant manner, as well as a number of their corollaries or, in her words, "close cousins," such as the closed graph theorem and Banach-Steinhaus.

And this brings me to the next count on which Elementary Functional Analysis is unusual: the density of gorgeous mathematics, presented elegantly and concisely, is truly remarkable, even if the text is meant only as an introduction to what the author herself calls a "huge field." Everything is proved completely, at a pretty high but not uncomfortable pace, and, as already indicated, the flow of material is excellent. What’s more, each chapter is followed by a long list of exercises that should afford the reader the opportunity to take it all to the next level, from absorbing the presentation (take notes, fill the margin of the book with comments, doodle… whatever floats your boat…) to doing battle on one’s own, so to speak (although some problems come equipped with hints).

So it is that in the span of about 200 pages, MacCluer takes the reader from Hilbert space preliminaries to Banach- and C*-algebras and, of course, the spectral theorem (introduced by a quote from Paul Halmos stressing that it all begins with Hermitian matrices). The book’s preface indicates that MacCluer’s intent is to present an effective introduction to the "huge field" of functional analysis, suitable for self-study, with modest preliminary requirements placed on the reader. She achieves her goal beautifully: Elementary Functional Analysis is a wonderful book.

This text is intended for a one-semester introductory course in functional analysis for graduate students and well-prepared advanced undergraduates in mathematics and related fields. It is also suitable for self-study, and could be used for an independent reading course for undergraduates preparing to start graduate school.

While this book is relatively short, the author has not sacrificed detail. Arguments are presented in full, and many examples are discussed, making the book ideal for the reader who may be learning the material on his or her own, without the benefit of a formal course or instructor. Each chapter concludes with an extensive collection of exercises.

The choice of topics presented represents not only the author's preferences, but also her desire to start with the basics and still travel a lively path through some significant parts of modern functional analysis. The text includes some historical commentary, reflecting the author's belief that some understanding of the historical context of the development of any field in mathematics both deepens and enlivens one's appreciation of the subject.

The prerequisites for this book include undergraduate courses in real analysis and linear algebra, and some acquaintance with the basic notions of point set topology. An Appendix provides an expository discussion of the more advanced real analysis prerequisites, which play a role primarily in later sections of the book.

Barbara MacCluer is Professor of Mathematics at University of Virginia. She also co-authored a book with Carl Cowen, Composition Operators on Spaces of Analytic Functions (CRC 1995).
