A real "feel good" book

The story was slow going at first but then picked up. Once the story got on a roll it was hard to put down. I had read the book "The Shell Seackers" first and in this book it mentions some of the charters which I liked. I am finding Rosamunde Pilcher 's books a good read.

Workshop Fodder

By now an oldie-but-goodie, WHAT WRITERS NEED comes out of the early 90s when the workshop method was at its heady peak. Yes, it is still the rule in many English classrooms today, but some teachers only engage in a "hybrid" workshop, no thanks to constraints put on their time by high-stakes testing (and so forth).

In any event, Ralph Fletcher covers the bases nicely by providing chapters on specificity, character, voice, beginnings, endings, tension, a sense of place, playing with time, unforgettable language, and a significant subject. Embedded in these chapters you will find specific ideas for mentoring kids as well as numerous examples from student writers, aged kindergarten to eighth grade. What's more, Fletcher offers many of his own pieces as exemplars, from poetry to fictional excerpts. This, then, is a writing teacher who can write (and, in fact, has published in many magazines).

Overall, it may not offer anything new if you're an experienced workshop practitioner, but you'll probably find a new angle on something and it's fun to read in any event. And if you're a novice at workshop curriculum, this will prove an invaluable primer on where you can go and what you can do. Add Fletcher to your bookshelf alongside Donald Murray, Donald Graves, Linda Rief, Nancie Atwell, and Penny Kittle.

Drupal and Design Advice for designers

There are really two different books going on here. The first could be titled something like
"Advice for Independent Web Designers". The other is "Drupal for Designers". Advice for Desgners
includes helpful material about UX, workflow, and interacting with customers. Having worked as
an independent consultant for twenty years, I found this material to be relavant and interesting.
There is a lot of good sound advice here. It just doesn't have much to do with Drupal.

The Drupal half of the book provides a good starting point, but in many areas left me wanting
more. I appreciated the chapters on Drush, Git, and LESS. I found the discussion of grid layouts
helpful. There is a reasonable introduction to content types and the basic structure of a Drupal site.
The case study and views example were interesting. The chapter on themes provide some helpful suggestions
on choosing a base theme and how to setup a sub-theme but didn't tell me what to do next. Drupal
is handled at a pretty high level here. We create some content, create some views, and add some modules.
The lowest we go is a bit of CSS. Anything involving PHP is a call to your nearest developer.

This is a interesting call. I enjoyed the book, I'm glad I read it still I have to give it a
pretty so-so rating. There is not enough Drupal content here for me. Let me qualify that by saying
I am a developer not a designer. The book is going to be a better read for a designer who wants
an introduction to Drupal along with lots of advice about web design practices and workflow.

Great concept....would've liked to have seen more theming examples

Drupal is a real difficult Content Management System to master. And I'm more on the creative side of the fence. So when I learned a book like this was about to come out, I rushed to get a copy. It's a great book. Especially when learning about new things to me like Drush and Git. However, I really was hoping for more theming examples. Instead of just giving us a bunch of base themes to consider, I didn't really get any nuances of how to actually take a theme and tweak the CSS or even the underlying HTML. He also writes about how to deal with clients. While that's very important, this isn't really the right book for it. I just want to learn Drupal. Not how to write a proposal. I know how to do that.

So it's the right idea. Wrong execution. I'm hoping someone will come along with an even better version of this concept down the road.

Superb Resource

There is a huge void of book resources for the designer interested in learning Drupal in conjunction with Fireworks. Many places share little bits and pieces but these fail to clarify Drupal processes and starting points.

Thankfully, this solid and friendly book eases Drupal using a very sensible, simplified approach.

Unlike most technical manuals, Drupal for Designers is a refreshing pleasure to read with a personal voice, loads of useful diagrams, nice typography and comfortable white space. As a newbie, I especially appreciate the specific grid recommendations as well as the interesting interviews with field experts. At this point I am referencing mostly this excellent book, sometimes alongside The Definitive Guide to Drupal (comprehensive resource for more intermediate/advanced Drupal). Thank you Dani Nordin and O'Reillyl!

Painfully Beautiful

This book did what 34 years of therapy with expensive and highly degreed therapists could not do. I lost my mother emotionally at the age of 12. While this book starts out addressing the physical death of a mother, it very well includes all kinds of losses that damage the mother-daughter relationship. My mother went from a warm, loving, nurturing parent who baked all the time and kept a clean house to a paranoid, delusional,slovenly woman who was never home, and who was physically abusive when she was; a woman who could not criticize me deeply and thoroughly enough. There were probably lots of reasons for that, none of them having anything to do with me. But at 12, how was I to know? I just thought she didn't love me anymore. I could not please her. At 16, I stopped trying, ran away from home and learned how to live on the streets.

This loss colored my life for the rest of my life, and it took every ounce of strength, energy and intellect to untangle the mess. This book shed some very crucial light on the deepest wound my soul carries. I know a closeness with my mother because of that painful bond that is a combination of pleasure and pain that is part and parcel of who I am. Today, thanks to Hope Edelman, I understand that bond (and the bond I have with my daughter)so much better.

A book for Every Motherless Daughter!

This book is fantastic. I wish I had had something like this to read 16 years ago when my mother died. At the age of 16, none of my peers could identify with my loss and continual told me to "get over it." you *never* get over the loss of a loved one... you learn how to live with it, grow from it, and become a completey different person because of it. Hope Edelman's book offers insight, comfort and guidance for Motherless Daughters. I have given several copies of this book away to other MotherLess Daughters and highly recommend it. I continually refer to it.. it is a permanent reference on my bookshelf.
