Great ending.

Very compelling story from a Christian standpoint. Scripture is used through out the book as a lead in to chapters as well as explaining sections of the story. Great ending.

LINDSEY'S FIRST (AND, TO DATE ONLY) NOVEL

Harold Lee "Hal" Lindsey (born 1929) is a best-selling author, who is currently host of "The Hal Lindsey Report" TV program. (He formerly hosted International Intelligence Briefing on TBN, but the show was removed as being too "pro-Israel"/"anti-Arab"; he provides the financing for the Hal Lindsey Report himself.) Controversially, he has divorced three times and married four times. (His second wife, Jan, was the best-known, as she was featured on the back cover of his earlier books.) He has written many other books, including The Late Great Planet Earth; There's a New World Coming; The 1980s: Countdown to Armageddon; The Rapture; Planet Earth, 2000 A. D.; The Final Battle; Apocalypse Code; Planet Earth: The Final Chapter; Vanished Into Thin Air; The Everlasting Hatred: The Roots of Jihad, etc.

He wrote in the Introduction to this 1996 novel, "you might ask, 'Hal, why have you now decided to venture into the medium of fiction? Why have you chosen to write a novel about what the Bible refers to as 'the last days' rather than another non-fiction book?' ... First of all, let me say that my nonfiction writing days are not over. I have not given up that principal mission. I intend to write more books about current events and their relationship to the prophetic scenario. There is still a great deal of unexplored, uncharted territory, and I fully intend to continue to break new ground in the non-fiction realm for as long as the Lord allows. What I have tried to do in my previous books is simply to illustrate how major prophetic events are being fulfilled before our very eyes... we see evidence of them unfolding more quietly in secret meetings in the world's major power centers. I have shied away, therefore, from date-setting and overly dogmatic analysis. Rather, I have drawn attention to events and trends that might be obscured by the secular media, and I have placed them in the contet or prophetic progression." (Pg. 2)

In the first chapter, "The Everlasting Enmity," the narrator says, "But Isaac and Ishmael never reconciled their differences. They never settled the blood feud that began in the tents of their father Abraham. Thus, the resentment between the descendants of Isaac and the descendants of Ishmael has carried down through the ages. Esau's descendants also joined with Ishmael's in this deadly feud for the past 40 centuries. Ishmael's people hate Isaac's people. Isaac's people distrust Ishmael's people. No ethnic conflict in the world can compare with this one in terms of duration and intensity of animosity." (Pg. 28)

One character speculates about the Rapture: "his Mom and sister---had vanished one day two years earlier along with several million others worldwide. Armstrong never did like the official explanations of those mass disappearances. Some officials suggested that space aliens had pulled off a mass abduction. After all, millions of individuals worldwide had previously claimed to have experienced a form of abduction... Others had a more spiritual explanation, blaming it on a 'harmonic convergence'---a natural function of the earth cleansing itself of the unwanted and undesirable elements that were holding back progress. New Age prophets had predicted such a phenomenon for years." (Pg. 66-67)

The narrator observes, "There had been a mystical prophecy given the children of Fatima that predicted the second pope after John Paul II would be aligned with the Anti-Christ. John Paul II, who was probably a true believer, also predicted the same thing, along with a famous Jesuit author named Malachai (sic) Martin." (Pg. 95) One of the characters recalls, "My mother made me read a frayed old book from the 1970s called 'The Late Great Planet Earth.' I thought the author, named Lindsey, was a total nut case at the time. But most of what he interpreted from the Hebrew prophets is now coming true." (Pg. 252) Even after Jesus has returned to Earth, "Jesus told the people of the earth to continue to study their Bibles. Even though ninety-nine percent of the prophecies had been fulfilled, there were still vital lessons to be learned in order to avoid sin and the trap of a lazy faith." (Pg. 339-340)

Lindsey is less engaging as a novelist than, say, Jerry Jenkins in the "Left Behind" series; on the other hand, his nonfiction books are certainly much more detailed than those of, say, Tim LaHaye, and this greater depth shows. If you like Christian apocalyptic fiction, you'll probably like this book well enough.

Plausible and Bizarre

Although this is a premier work in the area of fiction for the author, Hal Lindsey did manage to place me on the stage of fear in his novel. The third person style narrative was unexpected and so was the love story interwoven in this period of the greatest world war ever to be known. He did have some insights and I look forward to more of this kind of work

Starred Review. Discovering God's will is much more than simply making right choices regarding such events as marriage or career. According to psychologist and spiritual director Benner, surrendering to God's will is choosing God over self in all areas of life. It is willingness instead of willfulness. In this short book, veteran spirituality writer Benner takes a close look at willfulness in the forms of discipline and rigidity, then contrasts those with the freedom that comes with knowing God's love. That love, he says, is the basis for our surrender to God. With that surrender comes desire, and with that desire a willingness to make God, not self, the center of life. Benner admits to his struggles with willfulness, including God's plan for him to write this book instead of the one Benner planned, but he also describes the spiritual transformation he desires and sometimes fully achieves. He quotes often from the spiritual leaders of the past, a refreshing change from some modern authors who reduce God's will to "sin avoidance." His discussion of consolation, the name given by St. Ignatius for the feeling that we are aligned with God, and desolation, the feeling of being far from God, is an interesting and valuable addition to the book.

Knowing God's will

David Benner states in his epilogue that there is a difference between doing the right 'thing' and following the right 'way'. It is by going the right way that our will is most aligned with God's will for us - it is not something that is simply reducible to a list of things to do, or even a figuring out for particular decisions 'What would Jesus do?' This might have a component in the process, but this is not the entirety of the process.

In the Benedictine rule, one of the vows made is conversion of life. This isn't the road to Damascus kind of conversion, and Benner recognises that in the kind of transformation most of us are called to seek. 'Our response to God's presence is not usually the Damascus Road knocked-off-our-feet-and-struck-blind epxerience of Paul (Acts 9:1-9). Typically, God's presence is more subtle, and our reactions are correspondingly attenuated.'

Benner discusses the Examen and discernment process of St. Ignatius as a key way of looking at how our will and God's will might work together. The opposite poles of consolation and desolation are highlighted as means by which we can attune ourselves more completely with God's will. This is a very different thing that seeing the idea of following God's will as one more new year's resolution (an analogy Benner draws early in the book). We all have willfulness, which can have a darker side (Benner highlights the character of Judas, among others, and certainly the apostle Paul spoke at length about the problems of the will).

Benner calls love the antidote of this dark side of willfulness. This is contained in the Lord's Prayer - how often do we say this prayer by rote recitation, rather than hearing the impact of the words. Thy kindgom come. Thy will be done. These are very different from our natural impulses, which would guide each of us to say to herself or himself, 'my will be done.' Benner says that the question is not whether to pray or not, but rather which prayer to say, and that, 'when it comes right down to it, there are really only two possible prayers that can be prayed.' My will be done, or thy will be done.

Benner also introduces the spiritual practice of lectio divina, a time honoured practice that engages scripture and other spiritual classic writing with our heart, head and spirit. Approaching the scripture with open heart and mind, with an air of expectation that something new from the spirit will be revealed, is at the centre of this practice.

Benner is honest in saying that the will of God does not always lead to happiness, at least not as the world perceives it. This is no 'prosperity gospel' text. Sometimes the will of God leads to the cross, as any Christian should be well aware. However, there is the consolation, the heart-felt acceptance of God's presence, that comes from the entry into this kind of process.

Benner's book is a wonderful guide to the beginnings of spiritual direction. While spiritual direction is something best done in community or with a more experience person as guide, there are insights to be gained from this text about individual practices. Hopefully it will motivate the reader to continue further into discernment of where God's will lies.

Transforming

The book is very engaging. It reflects the truth about willpower and willing. Resolving is different from surrendering. Desire is basic in willing; choosing God out of desire for God. Surrendering the kingdom of self to the kingdom of God. The concept of taking up our crosses daily is graphic and emphatic. Death is the way to life! The problem is not with one finding the presence of God but being attentive to His presence by turning towards Him in centered and focused prayer. The problem is not with knowing God's will but accepting God's will. God wants to change out choosing not merely our choices. The author is very thoughtful and honest. He is aware of the contributions of others on the subject and makes good and appropriate use of the works and words of others!InBreaking Free: The Key to Empowerment, Happiness & Fulfillmentthe author also speaks of the importance of yielding to God for total healing and restoration.

David Benner is always profitable to read. This little book reinforces well a truth that will enable the reader to live in joy. Two other titles that go well with this are "Surrender to Love" and "Desiring God's Will." These three especially are in the great tradition of Brother Lawrence's "The Practice of the Presence of God." I buy these to give them away.

If it was that simple anyone could do it! Ever heard that?
Well that was my first thought after reading Lance Cooper's straight forward, well written and potentially life changing book, "Selling Beyond Survival".
My second thought was I wish I had this book 20 years ago to provide to the hundreds of sales professionals I had the pleasure of working with over the years. Would have saved so much time and helped so many achieve their life goals.
For the price of a decent dinner, you can greatly improve your sales results, and your commissions. So, don't wait for your boss to suggest this approach, buy the book, implement these techniques and prepare for success.

If you don't know what a Honey Badger is, I sincerely hope you youtube it. Selling beyond Survival lays out a plan of action for those who are not satisfied with their current income level. As a sales person, regardless of what I make, it never feels like enough. In this book, Lance Cooper lays out the mentality as well as the foundation for giving yourself a more profitable life within your sales career. Anyone that is not comfortable with their current income level needs to pull their credit card out and make this purchase. It could very well be the beginning of a new life for you!

This is a very well written book discussing a complex ...

This is a very well written book discussing a complex topic. It serves its purpose well as a text book for the college level senior or first year graduate student studying ethics and connecting with psychology. I have used it in the police academy teaching ethics, moral and cultural relativism. I believe it is a timely book that can be very helpful with changing society values and norms. Diversity has always been a cornerstone of our country; however, the difference today is instead of being a melting pot (even some say we never were) we are a toss salad. Understanding moral psychology, seems to me, as being essential. Dr. Tiberius has given us the research and the book, I my opinion, should be used when discussing morality and ethics.

Well written, thoughtful and inspiring

I am just getting into this book, but the author is doing a great job of setting out the framework for a new kind of thinking about the intersection of ethics in philosophy and motivation in psychology, which fits so nicely into my current intellectual, personal, and professional interest. I say this as someone who is a philosopher at heart (my major as an undergrad, and still first intellectual love), who then practiced law, and now practices as a licensed psychotherapist and has taught professional ethics at the graduate level. This is a text for a course that you can study on your own, or use as a course book in an undergraduate philosophy or psychology setting. I can even see this being useful as a core material for a graduate course for psychology/counseling students.
