La religion musulmane ne fait pas exception, selon lui: «L'islamisme, en réalité, a donc toujours persécuté la science.» Il s'attaque même aux «libéraux qui défendent l'islam [mais] ne le connaissent pas». Car, selon lui, «l'islam, c'est l'union indiscernable du spirituel et du temporel, c'est le règne d'un dogme, c'est la chaîne la plus lourde que l'humanité ait jamais portée».
Il ne faudrait toutefois pas penser que Renan, ancien séminariste, ait été contre toute religion. Il le dit explicitement: «Il ne s'agit pas pour le chrétien d'abandonner le christianisme ni pour le musulman d'abandonner l'islam. Il s'agit pour les partisans éclairés du christianisme et de l'islam, d'arriver à cet état d'indifférence bienveillante où les croyances religieuses deviennent inoffensives. Cela est fait dans une moitié à peu près des pays chrétiens; espérons que cela se fera pour l'islam.»
Pour cet historien de la religion chrétienne qui a écrit en 1864 une Vie de Jésus qui a fait scandale par son analyse positiviste dénuée de toute référence au caractère divin que les chrétiens reconnaissent au fondateur de leur religion — scandale qui lui coûta d'ailleurs son poste au Collège de France —, il est clair que la religion catholique n'a pas mieux servi ses savants: il «est hors de doute, écrit-il, que Galilée n'a pas été mieux traité par le catholicisme qu'Averroès n'a été traité par l'islamisme». Selon lui, «la renaissance scientifique de l'Europe» ne s'est pas faite avec le catholicisme, qui «lutte encore pour empêcher la pleine réalisation de ce qui résume le code rationnel de l'humanité, l'État neutre, en dehors des dogmes censés révélés».

This compact and cogent study of JetBlue is also a biography of its founder, David Neeleman. Neeleman had experience with local airlines and Southwestern, as well as contact with Virgin Atlantic's buccaneering Richard Branson, when he decided in the late '90s to found his own discount airline, now the most successful low-cost carrier since Southwestern. JetBlue has had its ups and downs—9/11 was handled extremely well; on the other hand, a major breach of security put passenger data into the hands of government security investigators. The carrier has also been subjected to major and, the author says, not overly scrupulous competitive tactics from its leading rival, Delta. On the business side, Peterson, Condé Nast Traveler contributing editor, focuses on how ossified the traditional major carriers had become and how thoroughly they had tended to reduce their passengers (whom JetBlue calls "customers") into servants of existing regulations, rather than make regulations and procedures serve the customers. The book is also full of contextual snapshots, including the sad state of New York's JFK airport, which JetBlue is trying to make a significant domestic hub again. While not quite hagiographic, the book lauds Peterson for working hard to implement a more congenial solution to air travel's dilemmas; many readers will agree and relish the details.

Jet Blue from the ground up

The author had an unfettered access to the movers and shakers within Jet Blue and provides a very good historical look at this start up airline. Now the airline, which is eleven years old, is one of the best know and heavily flown airlines in the country. There are many tenets within the operation of Jet Blue that are useful for any public service organization. They aren't just selling airline seats but are providing a service to their customers. I knew very little about the airline and thought it was merely a clone of the successful model provided by Southwest Airlines. Ms. Peterson pointed out the similarities and the contrasts between the two organizations. To be sure, the airline has had growing pains since the book was written in 2004, and it's founder David Needelman is no longer with the airline. I highly recommend this book as an inside the look of a successful corporation and the practices they incorporate to satisfy their customer. Further, it demonstrates the scrutiny that the FAA and the U.S. Department of Transportation puts any potential airline under as it tries to sprout wings!

Superficial. First half (formation of the airline) is kind of interesting. Second half is a scattering of stories, most of which are not. Very little critical analysis. Double-spaced at 268 pages, it's a fast read.

Richard Breslin's current research focuses on mentoring, cross-cultural training materials and the experiences of business people on overseas assignments. Brislin reviews submissions for over ten professional journals and five major textbook publishers. An excellent practical guide

An excellent practical guide for both students and teachers of
intercultural communication skills. The book provides a short, but
precise consolidation of the process of intercultural interaction, and
from there on focusses on identifying one of the most prolific tools,
the case study, employed to train intercultural communication
awareness and skills.
The 'culture assimilator' technique requires the trainee to read short
case studies, or critical incidents, that present culture clashes
between individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Trainees are
typically asked to select from a range of alternative explanations for
the incident. Through the process of discussing in groups, attempting
to draw a conclusion or discover underlying concepts, trainees learn
how and why people make judgements concerning the cause of behaviour.
The first third of the book provides a broad definition of
intercultural interaction and the issues involved at the point of
cultural misunderstanding (misattribution process). How the culture
assimilator facilitates the development of a more sophisticated,
layered understanding of cultural behaviour rounds out the
introduction.
The middle section of the books contains a substantial
bulk of critical incidents and their accompanying explanatory essays,
which cover 18 major themes that reflect the places and situations
where people are most likely to encounter difficulties (workplace, in
the family, education and schooling, settling in and adjusting,
socialising events, returning home, etc.).
The last third of the book looks at the application of the critical
incidents for an understanding of the emotional consequences of
culture clash, and provides further background for 'knowledge areas'
required to respond effectively to many every day behaviours.
For especially teachers and trainers this book is a rich source of
material to supplement courses or seminars, and a rare step-by-step
analysis of the development and use of a typical method of training
intercultural sensitivity. The authors guide the teacher and trainer
through the stages of administering the 'culture assimilator' using

Where's the beef in the preview?

The preview provides access to lots of the "nice stories". The value lies in understanding the range of meanings associating with each of these scenarios or stories. There does not appear to be one preview of these discussions. Each scenario also associates with a set of rather banal questions that do little to stimulate an inquiring flexibility of mind to the complex topics raised. Few things are the dichotomies inferred here.

a good perspective on the evolution of mathematics

This book is quite serious scholarship, so one does not encounter the romantic fantasies as for example in Bell's Men of Mathematics. It is certainly worth the effort to read to give one a flavor for the development and evolution of mathematics up through the twentieth century and a little into the twenty-first. I found that because it is serious, I will have to make some extra effort to understand some of the facets of the history addressed. Certainly, some of the topics are discussed somewhat more clearly and understandably in say Wikipedia articles. However, it is advantageous to have a large viewpoint such as given in the book. I teach math at community college and I think that it is helpful to a teacher to have this kind of perspective, even when one teaches only at high school or community college. The book inspired me to look into history more and I plan to do some more investigating. There are many interesting points that the authors bring up. I especially like the way they did not shy away from modern math, which can be pretty abstract. The areas I am interested in investigating further are areas of nineteenth century to the present. One has the impression that while math has tended to become more and more a game, like chess, for the specialist and aficionado, it has also certain elements of great interest that are not so trivial, and join with threads from the past to point into the future. One can have a great deal of difficulty separating the wheat from the chaff in the present moment in contemplating the recent events of the past, as so much of modern mathematics is dominated by fads that come and go. But the grand picture of events over hundreds and thousands of years is quite compelling. I have a basic background in graduate-level mathematics (and have passed Ph.D. quals in math), but I did have trouble understanding a fair amount of the book, especially the discussions of geometry, as my background is weak in that area.

Much of the history of mathematics is taken up with struggles to go beyond rather mundane limitations. "Modern" mathematics is appallingly recent. This is reflected in the weight attached in the discussions of the book to mathematical history that is concerned with such "tedious" details as getting to the point where modern numeration was achieved. The really exciting stuff in math is the more recent developments that have touched our lives with the wonder of mathematical creativity, and the development of modern algebra, analysis and geometry. It took a great deal of time for people to realize the possibility of non-Euclidean geometry, and yet once achieved, new developments came rapidly. I personally would have preferred the authors to have treated the very slow early development of mathematics in a more condensed way, and to have focused more on modern math. On the other hand, I have to admit I found the long history to be interesting as well. Even very simple developments such as the use of zero or negative numbers resulted from humans struggling to progress, often contrary to the dictates of common sense, and in the face of their prejudices. While this does not enlighten one terribly about the most modern mathematics, the story of this struggle is edifying and insightful.

This is first and last a history book. The first chapter begins with the early efforts to count items and make a record of that information. The concept of counting and records of the items formed introduced a new way of thinking. Early number systems were shortly joined by spatial measurements. I found it challenging to imagine what the early number systems met and more challenging to imagine what prompted the changes through the early records of history. This is not just a history of western civilization but includes the influences of Islamic world, China and India. From the number systems the book moves to elements of arithmetic, geometry and number theory. Mathematics slowly evolves into the art and science of solving problems. But this is not a book on how to solve mathematical problems but the history of when the problems were first defined and the initial attempts to solve them. Late in the book actual solutions by early mathematicians are addressed. Again the emphasis is on the history of the men making the discoveries not the solutions. Through out my reading of the book I found I took time to try to write the problem in modern notation and then recognized the solutions I was taught as a student. The book travels across many fields in mathematics some of which I have little knowledge and thus probably did not appreciate the elements of those chapters. This did not discourage me but instead prompted me to make a short list of topics to revisit in modern textbooks next year. Every mathematician should know the history of his craft and reading this book is a fine start.

This book is absolutely cram packed with fascinating information. I have a hard time putting it down. It was originally created as a textbook but I consider it a must-have for anyone interested in Mathematics. I have paid hundreds of dollars for textbooks that were not nearly as educational as this little gem. I highly recommend it.

A Magnificient Book.

Bruce Fife's book is simply the best available read on a complex subject of Alzheimer's. The solution of using ketones from MCT oils or organic coconut oil is seminal. Ketones are the only other energy source the brain can use besides glucose. And since everyone has a certain amount of insulin resistance as we age, this leads to a gradual and continual energy deficit leading to gradual deterioration of brain function as the brain can't maintain adequate synapses, myelin sheaths, and general brain function. Only ketones can make up this deficit. If used long term, you'll most likely never get Alzheimers. If you already have it, Bruce Fife's program will arrest its further progress and restore quite a bit of function, provided you are not too far gone. I strongly recommend the book, the program and supplements recommended in it. The book should be a standard textbook in any medical and pharmacy school. Yaffa Ganz is the prize winning author of scores of books for Jewish children. She has written three humorous, thought-provoking books of essays on contemporary Jewish life and hundreds of her articles have appeared in Jewish publications worldwide. poetry as page turner

Reading Yaffa Ganz's first book of poetry is like sipping fine wine while sitting on your lawn watching the sun set and at the same time hearing five loud little kids playing tag -- a mixture of serenity, beauty, relaxation, and energy. Confession: I rarely read poetry, haven't since college days, but haivng so enjoyed Yaffa Ganz's children's books, I couldn't resist opening this collection. It was a surprising treat and I read it through at one sitting. Mrs. Ganz knows how to move us with words, how to create images that make us see ourselves and our planet differently (I loved seeing clouds as "a celestial fleet/of ghostly ships"). These poems evoke a range of emotions and her descriptions of Jerusalem and Israel are nothing short of magnificent. The poetry is not obscure but it also doesn't tell all - it gently guides us and opens our imagination up. It is oddly enough, a book of poetry that is also a page turner. I highly recommend it.

Wheat, Wine and Honey

The first time around, I read Wheat, Wine and Honey by Yaffa Ganz in one sitting. The style, tone and content of one poem gave no clue about what was to come next, and the ride was exhilarating. She lovingly describes nature's beauty as testifying to God's creation. She embraces Israel, Torah, joy and family. But lest you think you will be reading conventional pieties, relax.

Yaffa Ganz's 'take' on these and other less weighty subjects is by turns wry, incisive, unsparingly self-reflective, whimsical, contemplative, and when required, agonized. To see how everyday life in Israel can be lived to the fullest, set aside the usual media distortions and instead read Wheat, Wine and Honey.

About the Author
Steve Wright is a visual effects compositing veteran with 70 broadcast television commercials and over 60 feature films credits. He's developed video games at Atari, done 3D animations for Robert Abel and Associates, and was senior compositor and 2D technical director at Kodak's Cinesite. Steve is now a freelance, digital-compositing guru, who teaches, trains, writes, and develops on-line training programs.

Fun way to get a solid foundation in compositing visual effects

This book is valuable because it gives the reader a solid foundation in a straightforward and fun way. I read slowly and it still felt like a quick read. Readers with a background in motion graphics (for example Flash or After Effects artists) who don't think of themselves as "compositors" will probably take away much that can improve the quality of their work. The author does a particularly good job at explaining the structure and attributes of digital images. The writing is precise and well edited. From learning the basics of color correction, to gaining a working knowledge of video and film workflows, the book delivers. It comes across as an industry veteran who likes what he does, giving "Aspiring Artists" a simple and strong foundation. Well done!

A good primer

I had originally wanted to get Steve Wright's other book, Digital Compositing for Film and Video, Second Edition, but read another review of this book make mention that it is geared more towards a beginner. At first, I thought this to be what I needed and when I got the book and scanned through it, it just seemed like an overview of the variety regarding compositing. I was a bit disappointed, until I started to peruse through more thoroughly.

What I liked (and am liking) is that it is geared towards more of a primer in the sense of the fundamental operations involved in digital compositing. And ironically, it was also what I did not like. I expected to have a more thorough or at least a methodical approach (not necessarily step-by-step) towards teaching basic compositing principles. That is what the aforementioned book describes. (And I say this based on the Table of Contents.)

So, I give a 5-star review to let people know that if they want to get a handle on "essential" concepts, that is easy to understand and comprehend, then get this book. Even if you have no interest in making movies or working in a VFX field, this will be a fun read to see the tricks the pros build upon to create some truly imaginative results. However, if you know what bluescreen compositing is, multi-plane compositing, premultiplication, etc., then this book might be redundant for you.

Once I'm done with this book, though, I'll be moving onto his other text and will be better prepared to absorb more detailed techniques.

This is the best Intro on compositing for newbies I have read!

So far I have read work through the 6 chapter of this very easy read book.I recommend this book to anyone who want to start in the art of vfx.Mr.Wright has a great teaching style that takes technical jargon and simplifies the visual effects for the total beginner with a lot of examples.Great job on this book looking forward to see other books written by this author
