Good story but doesn't match title

I liked the story and I'm glad I bought it, but there is no 'reluctance' as the title indicates. In fact Marian is the lead in sex and enlightenment when she is brought back to the Victorian era by the physician Thomas who, strangely, had never seen a female naked. Good part of the story is the role she plays when she meets Jack the Ripper. No spanking or discipline in this story.

This was a decent read, with the added suspense. It is an erotic book but has a story that ends well. I would recommend this one.

In The Truman Administration and Bolivia, Glenn Dorn tells the story of how the Truman administration allowed its strategic concerns for cheap and ready access to a crucial mineral resource, tin, to take precedence over further developing a positive relationship with Bolivia. This ultimately led to the economic conflict that provided a major impetus for the resistance that culminated in the Revolution of 1952—the most important revolutionary event in Latin America since the Mexican Revolution of 1910. The emergence of another revolutionary movement in Bolivia early in the millennium under Evo Morales makes this study of its Cold War predecessor an illuminating and timely exploration of the recurrent tensions between U.S. efforts to establish and dominate a liberal capitalist world order and the counterefforts of Latin American countries like Bolivia to forge their own destinies in the shadow of the “colossus of the north.”

“The sexenio—the six years between the violent overthrow of populist military president Gualberto Villarroel in 1946 and the rise of the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario (MNR) in 1952—has been examined by many studies as a backdrop to Bolivia’s national revolution, but no published treatment of the period in English or Spanish is as thorough as this one. Glenn Dorn makes a valuable contribution to the historiographies of Bolivia, of Truman foreign policy, and of Latin American–U.S. relations in the early Cold War. His book adds several important new archival sources to the study of the period, balancing them nicely, and tells the story with exceptional organizational clarity. Each chapter clearly develops Bolivia’s domestic dynamics during the period and looks at how a conflict-ridden bureaucracy in Washington generally worsened the situation. Eric Fromm is insighful as usual

Erick Fromm's exploration and explanation of the old testament is very interesting. He supports his thesis which centers around an interpretation that man will reach God when he accepts and acts in a Godly manner. Although many part are a bit antiquated in terms of the progress of humans and their acceptance of others, it is an insightful look behind the concepts that both the modern and conservative Jews still ponder and debate. If you want to understand some of the driving concepts of Judaism then pick up this quick read.

"Cheap Grace" vs. Ultimate Values

Erich Fromm (1900-1980)wrote a facinating study of the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. His book YOU SHALL BE AS GODS is an interesting view of Old Testament literature. Fromm focused on the concepts and convictions of the Old Testament as opposed to formality and fixation on traditions. Fromm's book was an attempt to integrate such ideas as compassion, kindness, mercy, etc. with traditions to make the Old Testament literature a call to action rather than comfortable apathy. Fromm cited interesting quotes from the Rabbincal Midrash and Talmud.

The beginning sections of the book provided an interesting study of interpretations of God. Fromm argued that God changed from an unrestrained tyrant to a constitutional monarch Who was bound by His own convenents and rules. For example, even God repented re the Flood Story when He repented via Genesis 9:11. When Abraham confronted God re Genesis 18, Abraham bluntly asked God if God would act unjustly by condemning the innocent with the guilty. Fromm cited Moses' attempt to undermine God's wrath. An interesting interpretation of these confrontations is intimacy with the Supreme Being. Closeness to God and His "laws" is a thoughtful analysis.

Yet, Fromm was clear that closeness to God was NOT an attempt to define God. The phrase in Exodus 3:14 that, "I AM WHO I AM" was attempt to deter idol worship. Fromm noted that idols are dead while God and people are creative and active. Men and woman should act and should act according to God's commands and rules. Basically, as Fromm knew, the Ancient Hebrews had different views of God. God could be tied to the land and race of the Hebrews. Or God could be universal as suggested in the narrative re Noah when God made a convenent with the human race. The Hebrew Prophet Habakkuk was probably the first to separate the concept of God from the land and race. Supposedly King David's father was Hebrew, but his mother was a Moabite woman.

Not only did Fromm write about the concept of God, Fromm wrote about the concept of man (men and women). Fromm cited the Creation Story in that everything God created was good except man. God created men and women in His Image, and Fromm interpreted this view that people had to the capacity for good or evil. The goal was for people to live according to the Image of God, but people had freedom to make a choice. God's call that people should be a "Holy Nation" meant that men and women should be better than their current status.

Are men and women predestined? According to Fromm the answer was "No." As Fromm noted, a difference exists between predictions and predestination. In other words, careless behavior and evil acts will eventually result in terrible consequences. Since people are free to make decions, their acts have consequences-good or evil. Much of The Decalogue dealt with social relationships such as murder, theft, adultry, etc. Fromm alerted readers that some of the Old Testament "heroes" had serious character flaws. Noah was confused. Cain was irresponsible. Abraham was a coward when he let the men of Sodom and Gomorrah violate his wife and daughters. King David committed unforgiveable crimes. In other words, men and women can overcome their evil inclinations if willing to recognize their weaknesses and their potential to be better people.

One of the last sections of the book dealt with the Psalms. Fromm catagorized the Psalms into four types of poetry. He explained a one mood Psalm as one where the mood did not change. The first Psalm is one of self righteousness. The 23rd. Psalm is one of contentment. The 137th. Psalm is one of bitter hatred. From described a dynamic Psalm as one with a sudden mood change such as the sixth and eighth Psalms. A messianic Psalm is one that is optimistic about the future such as the 90th Psalm. A hymnic Psalm is one of praise such as the 150th Psalm.

The Epilogue of the book dealt with the 22nd. Psalm and Christ's Passion. From argued that he found the usual interpretation unsatisfactory. Yet, as G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936)noted, Christ's depair was as radical statement as could be, and God was complaining to God. This is obviously a matter of interpretation, and this writer will leave the theologians to debate the issue.

Fromm's book is a good book especially for those readers who are not familiar with the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. Fromm provided what may be a radical assessment of the Old Testament, but such assessments can force people to carefully read and think which was Fromm's intention.

In this lively, objective history, Jasper and Nelkin, sociology professors at New York University, define three types of animal rights organizations. ``Welfarist'' groups, e.g., the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, accept most current uses of animals in scientific experiments while seeking to minimize their suffering. Such ``pragmatist'' organizations as Friends of Animals condone the use of animals when the benefits are likely to outweigh the animals' suffering. Most militant are such ``fundamentalist'' groups as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that encourage tactics of intimidation and violence. The authors point out that the pragmatists have achieved many of their goals through negotiation and legislation and that the movement has accelerated development of alternatives to live-animal testing.

Excellent for field geology work

If you are geologist going out into the field this book definitely comes in handy. I used this book during college field work to help identify rocks and features near the Enchanted Rock area in the hill country of Texas. To start off it is small enough that it can fit in your back pocket so you can whip it out anytime you need it. There are very detailed descriptions of the textures, how to identify the major minerals that are associated with most igneous rock units, and how to determine the possible history of the rocks present (there's also some information on metamorphic rocks toward the end). In the back of the book is a check-list, which comes in handy, on what you need to be sure to note; and it emphasises that every detail counts, don't leave anything out. Probably the thing I like about the book is that it can be read by the 'average joe', its not just in plain geology language. Anyone can follow the steps and identification procedures that it contains. If you're a undergraduate looking for a book that might be useful in field camp, then this needs to be put in your cart.

Stunning

Deva Zan is an extraordinary illustrated metaphysical fantasy. The author Yoshitaka Amano has illustrated many books by other artists, but this is the first novel that he has written, and what a wonderful debut it is. The prose could do with a little work in places, but the concept and artwork make up for any lack on the writing side.

Deva Zan is a powerful story about a Japanese Warrior from ancient times who has forgotten his true self - surely an analogy for everyman in this essentially Buddhist tale. His disillusionment with battle cause him to wander and come upon an ethereal girl who encourages him to seek his lost comrades and remember what they once were - gods - and what he once fought for - saving existence from the void. His journey takes him through many bizarre realms, including modern day New York City, and leads him to the Akashic records which hold all the data of all times. Here, he picks up a disc containing what he needs to remember, but reading its data comes at a price, the knowledge of one of their company's death.

The setting for the final battle is beyond the physical realm and the imagery invoked by the words at this stage is as vibrant as the artwork. Our concepts fold in on themselves along with a chunk of Manhattan and in true metaphysical style, good and evil, existence and non-existence are seen in their true light, as two sides of one whole. The book held my attention throughout and built to an exciting and conceptually fascinating conclusion.

I can't do justice to the intricacies of this beautiful book; it is a deeply spiritual tale that speaks of the very foundations of existence as understood in Buddhist philosophy. The surrealistic artwork is not merely an illustration, it is symbolic communication, an integral part of the story and, for me, the best part of the experience of reading this book.

I received this as an electronic ARC via Netgalley and read it on my iPad in a Goodreader app that allows you to see both pages of a double spread, a necessity for an electronic version because the layout of the artwork on the double pages is part of the aesthetic. However, even if this publication is available electronically to the public, it is one of those books you'll want in hard copy so you can pick it up and look at it over and over again. I highly recommend it.

Absolutely Beautiful!!

I have recently become a big fan of Amano's work, and this book is no exception.

The book itself: I was first struck by the overall size of the book. It was much larger, and heavier than I expected. The glossy text on the cover is a nice touch, and really adds to the overall feeling of quality. The pages are noticeably thicker than most books, which also adds to the level of quality.

The format: Deva Zan conatains over 200 illustrations by Amano ranging from rough sketches to fully composed works. Over half of the pages in the book are full sized illustrations. The story, also by Amano, guides you through these works.

The story: This was the part that most interested me about Deva Zan. Amano has done so many books full of his art, you kind of know what to expect there, but this was the first time that he authored a book. Put simply, it just works. The mood of the book is set brilliantly by the somber expression of his characters. Although the story does get a bit foggy in a few places, overall it is a beautiful and very philosophic tale of life, death, and everything in between.

The best part for me is the price, I would happily pay $60, $70 for this book.

Stunning art with a decent mythology story.

This is a stand alone book done by the artist Amano who has contributed art to both the Vampire HUnter D series as well as Final Fantasy (among a million other things). He is one of my favorite artists, so when I stumbled upon this in Half Price Books I was excited to pick it up.

This book deals with the mythology of Japanese Buddhism. In this book the twelve Juni Jinsho stood guard over the cosmos, each guarding a point on the zodiac…now they have vanished leaving humanity to fight against the forces of darkness on their own. Enter Deva Zan, a samurai with no memory who ends up journeying through time and space to find the Juni Jinsho and help restore their memory.

This book contains some amazing artwork, which I absolutely loved. The art pretty much makes this book. The book is amazingly well put together, it is a large volume with huge color plates and very high quality.

The story was decent and focuses mainly on Japanese mythology and one samurai’s quest to find the Juni Jinsho and help them remember themselves. The Juni Jinsho themselves end up being pretty stereotypical characters who vary in quality; some of them are incredibly interesting and some are forgettable.

The story is decently done, but can be a bit confusing and ambiguous at times. It jumps around some in space and time, but in the end everything came together nicely. The story does lag a bit at some points and, to be honest, it was the awesome art rather than the story that really drove me to keep reading the story.

Overall this book had some amazing art and a decent story. I enjoyed learning some about the Juni Jinsho and enjoyed some of the characters throughout. The art, more than story, was what made this book engaging. I would recommend for fans of Amano’s art and also for fans of the Vampire Hunter D series (the story has a similar tone to it).

About the Author

John R. Jensen received a BA in geography from California State University at Fullerton, an MS from Brigham Young University (BYU), and a PhD from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He is a Carolina Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geography at the University of SouthCarolina. He is a certified photogrammetrist and a past president of the American Society for Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing (ASP&RS): The Geospatial Information Society. He has conducted more than 50 remote sensing-related projects sponsored by NASA, DOE, NOAA, and the Nature Conservancy and published more than 120 refereed journal articles. He mentored 34 PhD and 62 master’s students. He received the SAIC/ASP&RS John E. Estes Memorial Teaching Award for education, mentoring, and training in remote sensing and GIS. He received the U.S. Geological Survey/National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) William T. Pecora Award for his remote sensing research contributions. He received the Association of American Geographers (AAG) Lifetime Achievement Award for research and education in remote sensing and GIScience. He was the Editor-in-chief of the journal GIScience & Remote Sensing published by Taylor & Francis. He is co-author of Introductory Geographic Information Systems and author of Remote Sensing of the Environment: An Earth Resource Perspective, 2nd edition, also published by Pearson. He has been associated with eight National Research Council (NRC) remote sensing-related committees and subsequent National Academy Press publications. He became an Honorary Member of ASP&RS in 2013, the highest award bestowed by ASP&RS.
